Progress Amongst Problems
We know many people are struggling mightily right now and our hearts go out to them! However, at the risk of being tone deaf, we at Peters & Milam wanted to share some positive news about current operations and future improvements.
Several years ago our IT vendor, CIO Solutions, educated us about the benefits of having a Cloud based IT system. We overcame our initial fears (and ignorance) and embraced that system and it has paid huge dividends. Not only has it been a great and secure system for day to day use, but it turns out to be amazing in a work from home environment. Today, every Team member has a system at home that is 100% equivalent to their system at work. This, combined with our move to a paperless office has allowed us to work from home at near pre-COVID levels of efficiency on behalf of our clients.
Post COVID, we again took CIO Solutions’ advice and started using Zoom (www.zoom.us) video conferencing and Slack (www.slack.com), an instant messaging and collaboration tool. Both services have a robust free version for your use. Zoom has allowed us to stay connected with regular meetings and even a couple of Friday Happy Hours. Just seeing each other’s faces has helped us stay in touch and be more positive than we ever could have done by phone. With the many features of Slack, we have vastly improved internal communications over our prior systems. When we can return to the office, these tools will be continued and allow us to work more efficiently.
The one area where we missed the boat was phone services. We can still be reached through our office phone, but it is not optimal. To fix this we are very close to moving to an VOIP (Internet) based phone system that will give us full functionality at home, out in the field, as well as in the office.
